Fargo falls 2-0 to Indiana

The Fargo Force transformed into the 1973-75 Fargo-Moorhead Sugar Kings in front of 3,701 fans at Scheels Arena for Throwback Night. It was the first game in a weekend series against the USHL Eastern Conference leaders, the Indiana Ice.

The Sugar Kings were slow on the offense and ended the night with 12 shots on goal and went 0-for-4 in power plays in the 2-0 loss against the Ice.

“Somehow, we have to try to find a way to get a goal,” said Head Coach John Marks. “We have to start moving the puck on the power play like we do in practice.”

Despite the lack in offense, the Sugar Kings also held the Ice scoreless on four power plays, including a five-minute major in the third period. Brendan Jensen ended the night with 34 saves.

“We did a nice job killing penalties for the most part,” said Marks. “There’s nothing fancy to the Ice’s game. They just come to play. They have a big, strong team and work hard.”

The Ice earned the 2-0 win with a goal from Jason Salvaggio in the first period and a goal from Dwyer Tschantz in the third. The Sugar Kings came close to setting up a 2-1 scoreboard late in the third, but officials waved off the goal.

“[The referee] said that he had his hand up to his mouth in order to blow the whistle,” Marks said of the call. “According to the new rules, if the ref is in the act of going to blow the whistle, and the puck goes over the line, it’s no goal.”

Jason Pawloski of the Indiana Ice was credited with 12 saves and the shutout, his second of the season.

The Force will return home at 7:05 PM tomorrow night for the second game of the weekend series against the Indiana Ice. Scheels Arena will host Ag Appreciation Night and Boy Scout Night, courtesy of Farmers Union. Ice scrapers will be given away at the door and dollar hot dogs will be available before puck drop.
